In this episode, Jesse breaks down the science behind energy system interaction and connects it to the training coaches use every day. He looks at how aerobic and anaerobic contributions change across events from the 800m through the 10,000m, why even short, intense events rely heavily on the aerobic system, and why training for different event

It's Not Just the Shoes
In 2005, Kenya's top 10 men's 5000m runners averaged nearly 16 seconds faster than America's top 10. In 2025, the Americans averaged slightly faster. If super spikes were the main reason we're running faster, wouldn't both countries improve by roughly the same amount? Instead, Kenya stayed relatively consistent while the U.S. improved nearly 15 seconds.
Everyone has super spikes.
What changed was the training.

Fast Enough for 400m; Fit Enough for 5k
Fast enough for 400m; fit enough for 5k. That sums up the way I think about high school training and the 400-5k system I like to use with developing athletes. No matter how talented a high school runner is, they are still in the early stages of development, so giving them an arsenal of tools is an essential part of their long-term success. The 2026 12-week off-season Cross Country training plan contains much of the training that you'd probably expect from a traditional dist
