I'll be the first to admit that building confidence, generating buy-in and inspiring believe is not my strong suit. I can scrape by, but I've never felt that I am giving my athletes the best in mental preparation. I have studied my 10,000 hours (and counting), so I feel strongly in my ability to build plans, write workouts, combine training stimulus and blend science, experience and observation into something that produces results. This approach works for athletes that are compliant and bought-in, but as we all know...that's not every kid on the team...or most kids on your team. The majority of kids need to be built up, motivated and inspired.
Dennis Newell, Head Cross Country and Assistant Track & Field Coach at North Dakota State University gave a masterclass on building confidence. I've included a few minutes of his presentation on the recent Coaching Distance Podcast and YouTube channel for you to chew on. The full 75 minute presentation can be found here.
