Elite Doesn’t Mean Different: Training the Superstar Athlete
Eric Dettman
Eric Dettman of Lincoln HS has been with the Lincoln HS program for 14 years, serving as the Head Coach since 2019. During his time there he has helped guide his girls teams to 8 state trophies, including 2 state titles and his boys team to 5 state trophies.
Since taking over the program in 2019 he has had a team or individual qualify for NXN every year, including 2 female individuals, 1 male individual, 3 female teams, and 1 male team. Under Dettman’s leadership, Lincoln’s program has developed a strong culture of consistency, accountability, and long-term athlete development.
The program has experienced sustained team success, while emphasizing that competitive success is a product of strong relationships, purposeful training, and a positive team culture. Dettman has a particular passion for developing distance runners and creating training systems that balance performance, durability, and individual athlete needs.
His approach combines data-driven training with practical coaching experience, with an emphasis on understanding why athletes are training rather than simply prescribing workouts.
At this clinic, Dettman will share practical strategies from his experience coaching high school distance runners, including training philosophy, workout design, athlete development, and building a team culture that allows athletes to thrive both individually and collectively.
